Son of Bernard Hand (a Gardener). He first secured work in a steel mill as smelters in Manchester. During the First World War eventually enlisted with Royal Engineers and assisted in constructing huge earthen embankments along the west coast of England for fear of possible invasion. He was then sent to the Middle East and demobilised in Damascus on 26th June 1919. During the War of Independence he was a Volunteer with the Clongill Company of the IRA. In March 1922 he joined the new national Army and was posted to Millmount Barracks in Drogheda, County Louth. He was discharged from the army to take up a career as a Civic Guard. Married Nora Mary Tierney on 25th August 1925 in St. Michael and Johns Church, Dublin. Retired on 9th January 1956. Died on 19th April 1972. He is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin. |
