Patrick Joseph Spillane was the son of (a Milesman with the Railway) and Catherine Kiely. On the night of 3rd December 1923, anti-treaty volunteers attacked Scartaglin Garda Station, Co Kerry while Garda Spillane and Sgt James Woods were on duty. Garda Spillane was badly beaten and Sgt Woods was shot dead. Married Bridget Mary Gaffney on 10th January 1934 in Durrow, County Laois. Retired on 15th May 1952 and resided in Skibbereen, Cork. Died on 12th December 1981. His son Patrick Spillane was also a Garda. On 22nd May 2026, his family were presented with a posthumous Scott Medal for the raid on the Garda Barracks which claimed the life of Sgt James Woods. |
